Happy Birthday Mom & A Dinner Party

December 16, 2011

Happy Friday!
Today is my Mom’s birthday!
Ma-I just wanted to let you know how grateful I am to have you around.
You have been an inspiration to me and I hope I can be just as wonderful of a mother one day as you are to me.
I love you very much and am so lucky to have you in my life.
Happy Birthday!
Mom and me
Little Mom
Over the weekend, we had a traveling family dinner to celebrate.
The meal started at my house where we had soup!
Then onto the parent’s house for a main course.
Finally to my sister’s house for dessert and a holiday movie!
( Claymation Christmas)
Of course I was a horrible blogger and didn’t take any photos of our meal or us!
But, I did snap a shot of the dinning room after I set it all up!
I got to use the wedding china.
For the first time.
Not too shabby.

The soup I made was delish and super easy.
Here is the recipe.
It’s Rachel Ray!
Cheesy Chicken Potato Soup
Make it!

Family Craft Day!

December 14, 2011

A few weekends ago I hosted a craft day!
A few friends and my sister, mom and aunt all came over with lots of ideas and inspiration.
We made snacks and then got to work!
There was knitting, crocheting, gluing, epoxying and lots of glitter.
Here are some photos of the day in action

Vintage glassware put together to be a funky candle holder

Paper cones to hold treats on the tree
My snow globe creation
It is made from an upside down ash tray, silver candle stick holder and a glass candy jar!

Pete & Pete

December 6, 2011

Remember Adventures of Pete & Pete on Nickelodeon?
I loved that show.

                                                               And don’t forget about Petunia

Could this be my next tattoo?!
I remember saving up box tops from cereal so I could send away for my free Cassette Single from the band Polaris.
They sang the theme song and I thought they were so great!
I was probably in 3rd or 4th grade at the time.
I also remember being upset that I had to pay shipping and handeling.
Nothing is ever free.

Did you know the older Pete was the bagel boy in 40 days and 40 nights with Josh Hartnett?!
I always thought he looks familiar!
In my research on trying to find out where the two ginger headed Pete’s are today, I came across a recent article about a reunion in LA!
If you were a fan, it’s a good read.
Basically it talks about how they blew Nickelodeon’s mind with their outlandish ideas and scripts.
I didn’t remember that it had started out as shorts originally though!
Here is the Article
The petes now
You have good memories of this show too?!

Holiday Wish List!

December 2, 2011

Have you started you Christmas list yet?
What?
You don’t make a list, because you are an adult?
That’s poppycock.
A year hasn’t gone by that this spoiled little girl has forgotten to make a list.
A Christmas list is important for me to ensure that I get all the gifts that I need for the holiday season!
How else are people suppose to know that I want the new MAC eyes shadow in Mulch, Patina & Purple Haze and not another Slap Chop?!
Ok, ok I’m not that self centered.
Buuuuuut, my mother, yes, my mother, encourages me to make a list , so that she doesn’t spend her hard earned money on shake weights and Snuggies that I will never use.
So, you see, it isn’t all my idea.
Someone else put me up to my selfishness.
By nature , I am a list maker though.
I make lists daily and update and add to them throughout the week.
Lists of what I need to do, chores, groceries.
If I don’t put it on my list, I will forget.
Anyway, on to shopping.
Here are the items I have so far on my Wish list for this holiday season!
AE Favorite Flannel Shirt
AE Reindeer Sweater
Glitz I Adore Top ( Modcloth)
Sephora Antibacterial Brush Set

Versace Bright Crystal Parfume
Express Zelda Jeaggings in Bright Blue

( for the domestic goddess I am)

I have them all on Amazon, in case any of you want to send me a gift, you are more than welcome! ( Again, just kidding.)
No, but seriously.
What is on your list this year??

I’m gonna wash that man right outta my….kitchen?

November 22, 2011

Christmas came early this year!
Steve broke the cardinal rule of never buying a woman a gift that plugs in.
 But, i don’t care.
Because I love it!
That’s right, I got my very own dishwasher!!
To most of you modern girls, I know this is not big deal.
However, my house was built in the 20’s remember?
Although, the kitchen is a decent size, a dishwasher never found it’s way in there.
Since moving in we have upgraded the fridge and sink prior to purchasing this little treasure.
When my husband told me he had a present in mind, but wanted my approval before he ordered it, I got a little suspicious.
I assumed it was the surround sound he has been wanting, or a new flat screen for the bedroom.
I must say I was pleasantly surprised when he showed me what he planned to buy.
It has been almost a year since we bought our house and one of the first things I thought we would do was install a dishwasher, but sadly it fell to the bottom of our list.
It also took some convincing on my part, along with a little help from  the HGTV show Property Virgins.
I had mentioned to Steve that I really wanted to get a dishwasher numerous times.
He went down the list of reasons why I should just live without one.
I came to the conclusion that I washed the dishes about 90% of the time and he just didn’t grasp how annoying it was to wash every single butter knife, fork and spoon we owned.
A few weeks ago we were watching HGTV and the couple shopping for a new home ended up settling on a cute little craftsmen house.
It needed a few improvements, just like ours did.
The show did a follow up on the couple a few weeks after they settled in to see how they were doing.
The couple showed off their new digs and upgraded kitchen.
The wife pointed to her dishwasher and said ” Obviously, the first thing we did was get this, it’s a necessity”
The newly wed husband boasted about how important it was they have a dishwasher and he understood why his wife was so pleased with it.
I just sat there on the couch, with my coffee cup, glaring at Steve.
Awww it’s so cute and petite
He got the message apparently.
I get the feeling he thinks I am spoiled, but he is slowly learning that what he thinks is spoiled is really just practical!

So long instant oatmeal!

November 21, 2011

I have upgraded to a more adult oatmeal version, if you will.
Steel Cut Oats!
It’s all the rage.
You see it everywhere now, just like gluten free foods and mustaches.
( More on that later, I am so burnt out on the damn mustache obsession! It’s like cupcakes all over again.)
This isn’t your childhood microwavable  rolled oats packet in a bowl.
Yes, it takes more time ( like 45 min) and more work( Stirring on the stove) but it is worth it!

I bought myself some steel cut oatmeal at the store on sale.
I kept hearing about  it and reading about it and I love oatmeal, so I decided to give it a try.
I was impressed that a little goes a long way.
I can make an entire pot (enough to portion out for 4-5 breakfasts) with just 1 Cup of oats!
Its simple.1. Boil water 2. Add oats 3.Stir & simmer till thick, about 30 min 4. Add in fixings ( I use berries, almonds or chopped pecans, brown sugar and a drop or vanilla or almond extract 5. Portion into Tupperware containers and refrigerate
Then I grab a container in the AM on my way to work and pop it in the microwave and I am set!
It is really filling and I like how hearty it tastes.
I LOVE nutty, grainy, chunky toast.
If you are a white bread kind of person, you probably won’t like this. It tastes….. “Healthy”
Totes worth the extra effort to make though!

Taste and Texture
The differences in taste and texture between steel-cut oats and rolled oats are largely due to processing variations. Rolled outs are flattened, steamed and toasted, so they’re lighter and fluffier. As they cook, rolled oats soften further and develop a thick, gummy texture. Steel-cut oats are whole grain oat kernels that have been split into two or three pieces but are not further processed. They’re thicker, nuttier tasting and more resistant to chewing. ( Similar texture to Quinoa, in my opinion)
Nutrition Facts
Steel-cut oats have a greater volume than rolled oats, so 1/4 dry cup of each variety yields different nutritional facts when the oats are cooked. However, when measured by weight, the two types have the same nutritional values. (Bummer)
Reasons to eat the Oats!
1. Lowers cholesterol
2. Fills you up and breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
3. It is inexpensive & lasts a long time on your shelf
4. Oatmeal contains a wide array of nutrients, minerals and antioxidants
5. It is 100% natural! ( If you don’t buy the crap kind)
