The sister graduated….again..

June 19, 2013

How many more graduations am I going to have to sit through for my sister?
She actually enjoys school
and keeps going back for more.
Me on the other hand…. never mind that

“You keep it going man, you keep those books rolling.
You pick up all those books that you’re going to read and not remember and you roll, man.
You get that associate degree ,okay.
Then you get your bachelors, then you get your masters.
Then you get your master’s masters.
Then you get your doctrine, you go man.
And then when everybody says quit.
You show them those degrees, man.”
This weekend she graduated with her Masters from Seattle University

Then it was off to Toulouse Petite to celebrate.
Too bad I am still on my diet and couldn’t eat whatever I wanted.
I had a steak salad though and it was still amazing.
This is totally not a kid friendly restaurant.
Small, swanky, no changing tables in the Ladies Room.
But we weren’t the only guests with a baby in tow.
We took this funny picture of grandpa and baby times 2!

“Because when I die Buddy, you know what’s going to keep me warm?
That’s right, those degrees.”
-Kanye

(Yes, Rose. I used lyrics from a Kanye West song on the blog about your graduation.
You can go throw up now.)

Happy Father’s day! Now, get back to work.

June 18, 2013

For Father’s day I got you……nothing.
because I got you something last year ( thinking it was so cute and cleaver and perfect even though you weren’t officially a real father yet) and you still haven’t used it .
Given…. it was from a garage sale and didn’t cost a lot… and by a lot I mean $2.00.
But it was still in it’s package and all the pieces were there and I’m sure originally it was expensive!
YEP!

So this year, instead of getting a gift… you get to work out back on building the new fence.
Because I want need that sucker done by Clark’s birthday party next month.
And let’s face it, this fence is half for you.
One, because WE are a unit and we share shit.
Remember I am your rib or something like that?
That translates to you build a fence and I sun bath in the new privacy of my backyard oasis.

future oasis

Two, because you really really really want a dog and we need a fence if we get a dog.
However, I did  need to do something for MY Dad, since he does tend to utilize the gifts I give him.
That’s probably because they aren’t cute little arts n’ crafts kits.
Although I am sure I made him a mean macaroni car or something back in the day.
His gifts are typically any of the below items:
(This goes for any and all holidays for the last ….well, my whole life and I’m sure before that too)
Books
Books about cars
Books about rock history
Record albums with cars on the cover
Socks
Gift cards for book stores ( to get more car or rock books)
Gift cards for record stores ( to get more albums of cars)
Some random item circled in the ACE hardware ad (ie hammock , folding chair with sun visor)

This finely tuned list makes shopping for him quite simple.
Unfortunately, it also makes it super boring and lame.
So my sister and I decided we would all do dinner at Tap House and then dessert at my place afterwards.

Since I am still on my diet and can’t have sugar or starches, I had to make 2 desserts.

One for everyone else:

Macrina Recipe Here
And one for me
Almond Joy Recipe Here
Mmmm mmmm don’t those look just as delish as the Macrina ones?
No.
They were alright… and even better once i added fruit and whipped coconut cream.
Paleo Cupboard  Coconut cream recipe Here
( It tastes great, but doesn’t look nearly as heavenly as the Paleo site advertises)
And Steve and both our dads worked on the fence!

Fences make the best neighbors

June 17, 2013

It has began
“Project backyard makeover hide the meth shed 2013″

Remember all that work we went through last spring moving the huge Rhodie plant from out front to the back?
Yeah, it died.
So we ripped it out.
No good deed , right?
Then the annoying Holly trees needed to come out.

Oops broke the fence.
Good thing we are building a new one.
And heck , why not take out that massive leaning Pine tree too?!
See more from the previous post

Oooop “Sorry Gracie, remember that Lilac you really liked out back? I kinda dropped a huge branch on it…and broke it off at the ground…”
so…….that sucks.
I decided to keep the stump of the pine and make it a planter.
This is the progress so far.
It’s harder than you
would think!
Then it was onto ripping out the back “fence” if you can even really call it that.
The neighbor dude came out to help us clear HIS junk outta the way so we could put new post holes in.
That was nice of him.
( There is an up close look at the Meth shed.
Don’t know if that is actually what goes on in there, but that’s what we call it.
It’s covered in tarps and trash.)

Meanwhile Clark sat and watched from the grass

aaaand now we don’t have any shade or privacy!

You start to go crazy

June 15, 2013

We have been spending a lot of time at Nona’s….and it’s starting to show.

Clark needed a baby bird bath by Grandma apparently.

My Nona, may you be in peace.

June 14, 2013

Nona with Tom cat

As the years went by, Nona said the darnedest things.
Every time we visited she became a little quirkier, a little more repetitive.

“The Cat wants in.”

I wish I had gotten to know her better earlier on.
When you are young, you don’t think about these things.
Then all of a sudden you are old…and so is everyone else.
Then it’s too little, too late.

“Have some more ice cream.
There is ice cream in the icebox”

When you are 12 you aren’t thinking
** I should write this down**

Goofing around as newly weds

I remember the day Grandpa died.
All of us were there and the whole thing was bizarre.
It was completely sudden and unexpected.
And in the middle of a high school graduation.
All of us rushed to the hospital following the ambulance.

I remember Nona in the waiting room.
Crying.
The only time I ever saw her cry.
She yelled out,
” But, I’m not done with him yet”
It broke my heart….she had been with him almost her entire life.

opening wedding gifts, silver flatware

“Are you hungry? Have something to eat.”

But she carried on.
She learned to use the computer.
To pay her bills.
To write a check.
To do basically everything.
All her life Grandpa had done all these things.
She had never even driven, he always had.
He was always in charge.
And that was fine.
That worked for them.
But when he passed, he left her utterly unprepared.

“Next time I see him, he will be walking!”

She said she saw her Mom on the morning of Grandpa’s passing.
She appeared to her in the bathroom at home.
She said, “It’s not your time yet.”
Nona didn’t know what it meant….till that night when Grandpa was taken from her.

“Do you ever talk to that nice boy you dated in California? Is he married yet?”

Over the course of the last 2 weeks Nona’s health has deteriorated.
Her only wish was that she remained at home till the end.
She talked more frequently about seeing Grandpa again.

“Cat wants in.”

We watched her slowly drift away.
During the 2 weeks, strange things happened.

Nona has always had cats.
Her and Grandpa were the epitome of  cat people.
Normally they had 4-6 cats at a time.
This last year she was down to just a mere 2.

Last week, one night a cat no one had seen before ( not a neighbors or stray) showed up on Nona’s back porch.
He sat and stared in the back door a while.
Then left.
A few hours went by and another cat showed up and did the same thing.
It sat  and looked in for a bit…then left.
The next morning a third cat showed up on the front porch and sat outside Nona’s bedroom window looking in.

The cats, they know.

As far back as I can remember, the coffee pot was always on.
Nona and Papa drank coffee all day, every day.
Last week …..the coffee pot crapped out.

The coffee pot, it knows.

Clark’s baby shower
Grandpa built clocks as a hobby.
As a result, their house is filled with a dozen grandfather clocks
( One for each daughter and Granddaughter)
Grandma wound those clocks like it was nobody’s business.
Like her tribute to Grandpa each day.
Every visit there, was interrupted by the incessant bing bong of chimes.

This week Nona had become bed bound.
To weak to get up and slipping in and out of consciousness.
We left all the clocks alone, didn’t wind them or set the chimes.

A bedtime scan was done of the house before lights out.
Everything in it’s place, a place for everything.
Next morning, one of the glass clock doors was wide open.

Did the clock know?
Or did Grandpa stop by to check in on things.
Probably irritated that no one wound the clocks.
He was a marine.
His clocks were always precise and you could bounce a quarter off the bed.

Thursday morning Nona passed.
Finally she can be with her love.
Her family that she hasn’t seen for many years.
Her sister, who she spoke of frequently

“I wish Mary could have met him ( Clark)”

And the final oddity.
The following day (Friday) just happens to be the 10th anniversary of Grandpa’s passing.
I’d like to think this was perfectly planned.
It wasn’t just a strange coincidence.
It was love.
It was faith.
It was her soul’s journey.

I am beyond thankful that she was around for so much of my life.
That I was able to bring back a spark in her when I moved to San Diego and she remembered the old days, when she and Grandpa lived there.
She came to visit me. Twice.
Not having flown before that for decades.
She eagerly boarded a place.
We went to the old apartments where she had lived.
I will always treasure that.

She got to see me get married.
She got to hold my first child.
There are so many good memories I will always have.

My wedding day
Bridal Shower
Clark’s birthday
Visting

I will always miss her.
But to know she is with the love of her life makes it all okay.
I know it’s the circle of life and I know it’s not scary.
She is at peace, finally.
I just wish I could say goodbye. one. last. time.

See you later Ellen.

The final count down.

June 13, 2013

Sorry, you don’t get a nudy pic of me.
But you get this wonder drawing I made instead.
Here are the diet deets:
That’s a combined total of  17.5  inches lost over the course of 30 days!
The latest.
This is day 1 & day 31.
I am honestly shocked by this photo comparison.
No photo shop, no sucking in.
Given, the lighting in Day 1 isn’t fabulous…but still, this is pretty great.
Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves though, the side profile shot is way better than the full frontal…which I am not sure if I want to post yet.
Well, why don’t you cry about it, Saddlebags.
:::In Ace Ventura Voice:::
I am now maintaining my new weight (phase 3) and adding in foods I wasn’t allowed in Phase 2 of the diet.
I made a delicious Paleo Granola because I have been craving cereal
Recipe Here
It called for honey, which isn’t Phase 3 friendly.
No sugars allowed.
So I used a very small amount.
It’s also much better after you refridgerate it a bit so that the coconut oil can completely solidify.
I, of course couldn’t wait to gobble it down and it crumbled into bits.
I also had some sour cream today.
Dairy has a variety of different effects on people, so who knows how mine will handle that.
I also bought some Coconut Milk to eat with my granola.
e
I bought the Unsweetened, because the vanilla & original flavors had more sugars added.
The verdict:
tastes like I am drinking paper.
So I cut it with half 2% milk. That helped, but not fabulous.
I think I prefer Almond Milk for now.
Also all this coconut stuff is making the tummy rumble and rattle.
If you didn’t know this already , coconut is a natural laxative.
That goes for all things coconut; oil, butter, juice, milk etc.
I found this out the hard way on my Honeymoon in Jamaica…
*And you though drinking out of a coconut with a straw was sooooo cute*
Buyer Beware.

Week 3, down 23 lbs!

June 12, 2013

My diet was suppose to wrap up and move in to the 3rd phase by now but I was bouncing around the same weight for almost a week.
I would go up .2 then down .4 then up .1 then down .5.
So I decided to stick with this phase of the diet and try to drop a few more pounds just to make sure I break through that set point I seem to be stuck on.

My body obviously doesn’t want to move from that weight for some reason.
I really really want to expand my food horizon and add in the foods that I haven’t had for almost a month now, but I figured
“Hey, I am already here, might as well stick it out a few more days and just get it over with”
Other wise I am going to get frustrated later on and want to diet again and wish I had just done it when I was already on the diet path the first time!
Through all this I haven’t really dropped sizes or look noticeably different.
My clothes just fit a whole lot better.
I went shopping in my closet today and fit into some summer dresses that I know I wouldn’t have before.

It’s crazy that I can loose 20 lbs and you still can’t tell much difference when you look at me.
I mean, I can tell from the way I feel, but I don’t think anyone else would notice or think I was all of a sudden significantly thinner.
Which is sad! 20 lbs is substantial.
I guess it was all the hidden fat that left my body…
Visceral fat.
This picture kinda slaps me in the face though and says hey shut up

So….. I had 20 of that?
Gross.
The progress:
Now it’s onto increasing calories and staying away from Sugar and Starch.
Basically a Paleo diet plan.
And work exercise back in.
Because obviously, one needs that to stay fit.
Okay, let’s do this thang.
