Dry Shampoo Product Review & Giveaway!!!

April 15, 2011

Hair powder is the glue that holds together my life.
If you haven’t used it before, it is magical.
It not only keeps my hair fresh and ungreasy ( I have oily Italian tresses)but it also allows me to skip shampoos. Which is a good thing.
I try to wash my hair as little as possible to avoid stripping and damaging it, especially now that its bleached out.
Also because washing and drying my hair is a f*cking chore.
Call me lazy but I hate showering. There I said it. I know you have thought it before too.
I have a lot of hair and it takes some serious time and labor to wash, condition, brush, dry & lather on serums and creams.
It gives serious meaning to the date excuse
“ I can’t go out tonight, I have to wash my hair.”
Hair powder solves all problems. AND it gives me amazing volume and makes my hair way easier to style.
I have tried a ton of different brands and thought I would share my experiences with you guys and top it off with a giveaway of my number one!
First up:
Oscar Blandi Pronot Dry Shampoo Powder:

This is the first little treasure I was introduced to back in the day. It comes in a small squeeze bottle that dispenses little poofs of powder onto your scalp. I used it a lot when I was going out on the down and needed to back comb my under layers for volume. I would throw a little down prior to hair spray and combing. Worked well, but I blew through it so quickly due to it’s small size. Since it wasn’t a spray, I also ended up with some areas that too much powder was dispensed and my black hair had white spots. Purchased at Ulta or Sephora.
Ojon Rub Out Dry Cleansing Hair Powder Spray:
A great upgrade to a spray from the shake powder. This stuff works great and now comes in a variety of different shades too, so if you have dark locks you don’t end up with grey hair from white powder. I could use a can in 2 weeks and at $24.00 , it got pricey.Purchased at Ulta or Sephora.
Pssst! Instant Spray Shampoo:
Originally from the 80’s and sold in the camping section at the drug store, this is the best 7.00 I have spent! It doesn’t have the fancy bells and whistles that all the designer brands market but it does the job completely. There isn’t a scent and it only comes in white. The mist is fine enough that it didn’t cause discoloration in my hair though. After using and reusing multiple days with out a real shampoo though, it caused build up and graininess in my hair. Purchased at Bartell Drugs.

TIGI Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo:
Love this stuff! It smells like Pine sol and I only buy it on sale at TJ Maxx or Nordstrom rack but it works wonders. The can is larger than most of it’s competitors, so even though it can run you anywhere from $17.00-$22.00, it will last a lot longer than the first 2 brands on my list. I am also a sucker for TIGI products; they have cute names and labels.
TreSemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo Spray & Mousse Foam:
I was SUPER excited when this line was launched last summer. Finally a drug store line that I can afford but something move evolved than the decade old Pssst! First I tried the foam because I was unable to find the spray. Huge disappointment. The mousse foam did nothing but make my hair slimy. I returned it after trying it twice. I finally tracked down the spray. Dually disappointing. Although it smelled good, it was a lot thicker than all the other spray because it has more of a clay base than a powder. Perhaps the problem is my hair type but it ended up making my hair feel heavier and dirtier than before I sprayed it in. Purchased at Target.
Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo Spray:
Winner winner chicken dinner!
BY FAR the best out of all of these options. The scent of this spray is amazing. It has a fresh citrus smell that lasts all day thus making my hair not only feel clean but also smell clean too. It goes on super fine and never weighs my hair down. I can layer it on for a few days between washes without any buildup. It gives me tons of volume and body, everything you could ask for from a dry shampoo. It literally makes my hair look and feel like I just washed and blow dried it.

Design just in time

April 12, 2011

As you guys know, I am always scouring the inter webs for great decorating inspiration and design.
I found some neat rooms and furniture that really don’t fit into any specific design criteria but I wanted to share them because I love them all!
The home office:
This metal chair looks great with this theme but I doubt you could sit in it for long.
The ladder shelf:

Originally an expensive storage unit from Pottery Barn or Crate & Barrel.
Now you can find it on Craigslist and Target!
I love this color, it could be thrown in with so many other things for that one POP of brightness.
The country Kitchen:
This pantry  and oven look like a dream
The leaning mirror:

I’m a sucker for the shabby chic .
This mirror is inspiring me to find an old door and add my own mirror to it maybe…
The pink Kitchen:

Have you ever seen anything like this?! I doubt it.
There are a few things I would change about it though.
I love the pink, but I think it would look better if they had followed the vintage theme throughout.
The cabinets, lighting and shelves all go great, but the wicker and floral back splash make me think Florida Senior Center for some reason.
Green Pantry:
This is perfection to me. It is my color and style and I love the plates on the wall.
The modern bedroom:

This green dresser against the grey wall is awesome.
I love this color scheme with the black accents.
It’s so fresh but cozy at the same time.

Flea Market treasures & the perfect jeans

April 11, 2011

This weekend I went to 2nd Saturdayz Flea Market with my sister and mom.
It was a great collection of treasures and junk.
It totally inspired me to get crafting again.
Currently everything is still boxed up in my basement though!
Here is what it looked like inside :

This mail box totally reminded me of my dad who is a huge trivia buff.

I got this huge flower hat made out of ribbon.
I think it will be perfect for my upcoming Vegas trip!

It can be worn as a belt too.
The hat is way more fun though!
And here are the other things I picked up
A Virgin Mary wall font and religious figurine to add to my collection.
A vintage seahorse pin, and painted iron bow to nail to something.
Most random find goes to the old boat tag for Hicks lake in Lacey, WA.
This is the lake my grandma lived on and I spent tons of time at while growing up!
Afterwards we headed over to U Village for some shopping.
I fell in love with this garden bench at Revenna Gardens.
It looks like a mini Gothic chapel.

And this neat potting shed!

Then we went to Anthropologie.
One of my favorite shops.
They had these cools shelves on display.
They had cut a wood chair in half and added a shelf in the middle.
Then reattached the legs to the bottom.
I always see random vintage chairs at garage sales that I want.
This would be a great and useful way to display them and still save space!

We went into an art store that had tons of local photography and I found this great print of the needle and the Hostess Bakery sign downtown!

I got a new pair of jeans from Guess and love them!
They were on sale and then another 40% off.
Usually the clothes on those types of racks are there for a good reason.
I think I found a diamond in the rough though.
 They fit great!

My mom sewed me adorable curtains to go with my Kitchen Theme.
Here they are on the windows in the kitchen

Awwwww so sweet.

Must. Bake.Cupcakes.

April 8, 2011

This weekend I received a fabulous gift from my Aunt & Cousin when they came by to see the casa.
My cousin Lily is also a blogging diva.
Check out her fashionista tendencies over at Lillies And Lace.
They presented me with a teacup cake baking set!
They are silicone cups that hold their shape without needing a muffin tin.
You fill, bake and decorate.
Then place on their cute little plastic plates and serve.
I had to try them out right away!
Out of the Oven

Cupcakes on Parade

Then it was on to my REAL project.
The real reason I dug out all the pots and pans to get my baking underway.
I had a request to bake “Opening day Baseball cup cakes”
Here is what I came up with!
HOTDOGS!!!
How to?

Circus Peanuts = buns
Squished up caramel squares = wieners
Use toothpick to make wiener lines on the ends
I filled my almond cakes with cherry pie  filling.
I thought it seemed all American and fitting for baseball.
Plus I like Cherry WAY more than apple.

Frost the  cupcakes
Throw on some Mariners colored sprinkles
Boom. Baseball cupcake.
Turned out pretty cute!

The painted cupboard & tea time

April 7, 2011

I painted the walls of the soon to be pantry green and we are painting the cupboards and shelves white, but I can help but think how cute it might look if I use an alternate color inside the cupboards too.
Here are some cute ideas I came across

Or wallpaper the inside?!

Apparently teacups and painted cupboards go together because I kept finding stuff related to them both in my searches!
It just so happens that I have a ton of cups that need a purpose

Isn’t this a great idea?! Tea cups as a jewelry organizer!

Feels good to do nothing.

April 6, 2011

This past weekend I didn’t get as much done around the house as I would have liked.
I ended up going shopping with my mom and got these cute Rocket Dog pumps at DSW.
I love that they carry my size in a lot more shoes now too!
It actually makes shoe shopping fun.
(Something I have never experienced before)
You can’t see it in this photo but there is gold thread in the weave of the fabric.

And I got this great across the body purse.
Everyone seems to have them now and I thought it would be a good bag for summer.
Sometimes my purse gets annoying when I am shopping and it keeps sliding off my shoulder.
Then I hung out, made coffee, unpacked some books…
and sugar ants infested my kitchen.
So I made a mad dash to Lowe’s and got spray for inside and bait stakes and powder for outside.
I really hope that solves the problem and we don’t have to hire an exterminator.
Then I spent the rest of the afternoon doing my nails and trying out different hair dos and not working out.
(Although, I did think about it, that had to burn some calories right there)
And my new heels came in the mail too!!
Love them!
(Hey they match the top I am wearing. Fancy!)
Hope you all had a more productive weekend than me!

Lemon Cream Cake & the Dining Room is done!

April 5, 2011

Since I am old, I spent Friday night home, alone, baking.
I decided to try a new recipe out of the Macrina Bakery & Cafe’ Cook book.
I love everything I have made from this book and have had it for years.
If you have never been down to Macrina Bakery in Seattle, it is worth the trip.
Yum-o.
Here’s my Friday night special:
Lemon Butter Cake with fresh strawberries and Lemon Cream
Find Recipe Here
Ready. Set. Go.

Using fresh lemons over juice from the bottle takes a little longer, but it’s worth it.
(And no, the juice out of the lemon shaped bottle doesn’t count.)

Adding the dry ingredients to creamed butter.
After adding milk and egg mixture.
This is more like a pound cake, so the batter is thicker than usual.
Don’t be alarmed, you didn’t forget to add your liquids.

Strawberries were on sale!

Cooling is important.
You don’t want to work with your cake until it is completely cooled or it will crumble.

I used a brush to add the simple syrup to the layers, then topped evenly with berries.

Add a layer of the lemon cream

And repeat
Use the remaining Lemon Cream to ice.

VOILA!
Dining room finished product

My coveted Hot Dog menu.
(Yes, it was really used back in the day at a hot dog stand)

Side wall decor

” If I knew you were coming I would have baked a cake”

My table scape

Did I mention I love kitschy religious stuff?!

(Grandparents & parents wedding pictures)
Decorating is good for the soul.
